Lapis lazuli is actually made up of several different minerals- the most common are lazurite, pyrite, and calcite.

Lazurite is responsible for lapis's beautiful blue color. Those little white patches you sometimes see are calcite, while the tiny gold-colored flecks are pyrite. 

Fun fact: ground lapis lazuli was once used by European painters to create an incredibly valuable blue pigment called ultramarine.
